Topics: Cloud Volumes ONTAP Advanced2 minute readAdded Values
I recently got a chance to sit down with NetApp Cloud Solution architect Akash Gupta and Justin Parisi of the Tech ONTAP Podcast to talk about Cloud Volumes ONTAP.
If you aren’t familiar with the Tech ONTAP Podcast, in each episode Justin takes a deep dive into a different resource or feature here at NetApp, whether it’s working to modernize the classic data center or covering the latest developments with technology from NetApp partners. Below you can listen to the full episode Akash and I were on, but before that, I want to take a minute to introduce Cloud Volumes ONTAP if you don’t already know what it is.
What Is Cloud Volumes ONTAP?
If you’re a long-time NetApp storage system user, the big question you’re probably asking is what is this Cloud Volumes ONTAP everyone keeps talking about? To put it as simply as possible, Cloud Volumes ONTAP is ONTAP. It’s the same operating system that has been the framework for using NetApp storage for years, except with one major difference: it can work with resources in the public cloud provided by AWS or Azure.
But that’s just scratching the surface of what this powerful technology can do. Akash and I go into a lot more detail in the podcast.
Here’s another look at some of the great features and benefits that come with using Cloud Volumes ONTAP in case you want to find out more.
Features and Benefits of Cloud Volumes ONTAP
- Lower storage costs
The well-known NetApp storage efficiency features—data deduplication, compression, compaction, thin provisioning, and storage tiering— that cut down storage consumption also lower the monthly cloud bills. - Data protection - Snapshots and DR
NetApp Snapshots bring a huge added value over the snapshots that are available on the public cloud. These can be leveraged both for backup and as a DR solution. - Business continuity / HA
Enterprise operations can’t afford to have more than a minute of downtime without serious financial effects. Using the Cloud Volumes ONTAP HA (high availability) dual-node configuration ensures business continuity with no data loss and recovery times of less than a minute. - Data migration
Cloud Volumes ONTAP gets you started with the cloud by moving your data to AWS or Azure with NetApp data replication technologies. - Multiprotocol file access (SMB, NFS, iSCSI)
Configure volumes that can serve SMB, NFS, and iSCSI protocols interchangeably. This flexibility isn’t available in any of the cloud’s fully-managed file services. - Multicloud and Hybrid
Avoid vendor lock-in by leveraging resources from multiple service providers or extend your on-prem environment into the cloud. Cloud Volumes ONTAP allows full data mobility and management across varied infrastructures. - Kubernetes provisioning
NetApp’s open-source dynamic provisioner, Trident, works with Cloud Volumes ONTAP to automatically respond to persistent volume claims in Kubernetes. - Automation and Orchestration
OnCommand® Cloud Manager is the GUI for automating and orchestrating Cloud Volumes ONTAP management. With every Cloud Manager function accessible via RESTful API calls, storage is easy to work with infrastructure as code.
