Topics: Cloud Volumes ONTAP AWS2 minute read
I present our Hybrid Cloud products and solutions frequently to colleagues and customers. Quite frequently, in fact.
When I do, I normally ask the audience, “How many of you are familiar with the Public Cloud?” Usually 80% to 90% of the audience raises their hands. As a follow-up, I ask, “How many of you that raised your hands are actually using the Public Cloud?” The number of hands quickly drops to around 15% or so.
This highlights that while many people are discussing Public Cloud and trying to understand what the public cloud is going to mean for them… many of them haven’t used it yet. In many cases they don’t even know where to start.
With that in mind I wanted to provide a little guidance on just that… getting started. Specifically getting started with Amazon Web Services (AWS). How to sign up for an AWS account, as well as some initial areas to focus on once you do have your account.
Creating your AWS Account:
Creating an account is fairly straight forward, but I know it still helps to list out the steps:
- Open a Web Browser and go to aws.amazon.com
- Once there, click on the Get Started for Free button to the right
- Next, provide an email address you'd like to use, select I am a new user, and click on Sign in using our secure server
- After that you'll need to provide some of your contact details, payment information, and verify your identity
And that’s pretty much it! It’s super easy to sign up for an AWS account.
For those of you that like to follow along with someone going through the steps, we’ve also created a short video to walk you through an AWS account creation.

Now that you have your AWS account... what's next? What do you need to look at or consider once you’ve got your account? My thoughts here run to two main areas:
- AWS Account Management
- AWS Basics
Both areas have their own extra aspects that we’ll cover in other posts in this series, but for now we hop that you found this information helpful in …. Getting you started!
